Is Your Negative Self-Talk Standing In The Way of Your Magic?

Negative Self-Talk

This past week I had a session with one of my gorgeous private clients which, quite frankly, gave me a serious case of déjà vu. Everything that she said, every emotion she was feeling, was word for word something that I’m sure I have said and I know I have felt - particularly in the very early start up days.

Before I get into our conversation, let me share a bit about this beautiful client. Firstly, as everyone who I have been lucky to meet in this community has been, she is brilliant. Strong, heart driven with a really impassioned ‘why’. For her, this is not about creating a fun side project (not that there’s anything wrong with that); this is about wanting to take ownership in creating a life she loves in every which way.

During this particular session though, we were dealing with a serious crisis of confidence. After a couple of particularly empowered sessions, the mood of this chat went something along the lines of “…why would anyone come to me when there is already so much talent out there?”

Yep, I get it.

Hand on heart, I have never felt more unstable as I did when I was first starting out in business. I would go from feeling like an unstoppable beast to completely deflated, wanting to retreat with my tail between my legs, only to bounce back minutes later. The ups and downs were, and are, exhausting at best and debilitating at worst.

One of the common themes of doubt that played a regular part in my life script was ‘but who’d want to hear from me??’.

This was, until a very wise friend sat me down and told me to check the pity party – and the ego – at the door. He reminded me that no business is about it’s founder; rather it’s about what the business will do for its customers. How, through the services it provides, it will make its customer’s lives richer, easier, happier and fuller - in whatever way that this applies to your line of work.

The moment you take you out of it and refocus on why what you are doing is so important, the self doubt becomes completely irrelevant. It’s not about fighting the negative thoughts and trying to wish them away; it’s about finding a way to turn down their volume so that they are no longer a voice worth listening to. In the wise words of Leon Brown, "what you give power to has power over you, if you allow it."

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Do you have a secret way of bouncing back when the inevitable self doubt creeps in? Send me an email or join us on Facebook. I'm looking forward to hearing from you! Until then...
