Mums Living Fearlessly

I'm a big believer in celebrating each other's success and being inspired by what others are doing. I also know there is so much value in getting to know each other and learning more about the incredible mums who make up our community.

This week, I had the opportunity to sit down with Sandra and Amelia, two mums who joined forces to create A Pop Of Love Photography after identifying a gap in the children's photography space. They shared their "why”, their big business lessons and their favourite hacks for making the most of their very valuable time.

The Mothers Den: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Sandra and Amelia: A Pop Of Love Photography is the lovechild of stylist mum, Sandra (mama to Annabelle) and photographer mum, Amelia (mama to Liam). We met one another in the wonderful world of weddings and after entering the exciting world of motherhood around the same time, we realised there was something missing in the area of kids photography and came together to create something fun, stylish and awesome for busy parents who wanted to get professional photos of their kids without breaking the bank that were also migraine-free. So A Pop Of Love Photography was born.

A Pop Of Love Photography is an Australia based modern pop-up photography studio specialising capturing cool and beautiful portraits of kids at every age. As mothers, we appreciate how quickly kids grow and change and believe in providing fun and affordable ways for parents to document their developing personalities every step of the way.

We love capturing kids just as they are - whether they have loud or quiet personalities. We don’t do cheesy or heavily styled and decorated shoots - we are about snapping up those fleeting memories of children in the most authentic of ways so both parents and the kids can look back on them in years to come and remember what they were like. That might mean some tears, lots of smiles or even no smiles and that is all fine by us. We get it - all kids are different and we love that.

The Mothers Den: Why A Pop Of Love Photography?

Sandra and Amelia: The idea came about after we both became mums and realised that kids didn’t have the longest attention spans (or at least ours didn’t!) and the thought of taking them out to a park for a one hour family shoot would get us hyperventilating (cue the migraines!). And yes this applied even to Amelia, a photographer! So we thought why not create a way for parents to be able to ‘pop’ in for a quick photo session with their kids and get some snaps of them as they are, at whatever age or milestone they’re in?

We pop up once a month in Sydney (and next stop Melbourne in July!) and offer a quick get-in-get-out for parents to bring in their little ones, have a pop of fun with them and capture their personalities in a controlled studio setting. Come for every milestone or once a year or even to every pop up event, we make it fun and easy for parents to document your kids’ personalities.

The Mothers Den: What do you love most about your business?

Sandra and Amelia: We love meeting all the kids that come through our studio. It is so true that all kids are different, no matter their age and all the kids we’ve been fortunate enough to meet have all been so wonderful in their own way and we are really grateful that parents place their trust in us to document their little personalities for them. It makes doing what we do easier and makes us love what we do more.

People always comment that it must be hard photographing so many kids in one day (we can sometimes have 24 kids coming through in 6 hours) and we’re pretty amazed that we don’t find it tiring but we know it’s because we love hanging with those kids. And when we see the parents having fun as well and loving the photos afterwards, it just makes it all the more rewarding and worthwhile.

The Mothers Den: What has been the biggest learnings from starting up your business?

Sandra and Amelia: This has got to be that kids really are all very different and you can never know what to expect when they walk through the door. We’ve had outgoing kids who become the shyest in front of the camera and ordinarily shy kids having the time of their lives at the studio and this has taught us to really just go with the flow. We’re sure most parents know that there’s only so much you can plan when it comes to kids!

Having photographed so many kids in such a short period of time since we first started A Pop Of Love in November 2015, we’ve become quite good in getting the kids settled in and bringing their personalities out. We have quite a few tricks up our sleeves now and are pretty well equipped to deal with any personality that comes through our studio doors (or so we think!).

The Mothers Den: How do you stay motivated when life outside of business gets too overwhelming?

Sandra and Amelia: The great thing about our partnership is that we both bring a different skill set to the business so we complement each other really well.

We’re also each other’s personal cheerleaders in this business as well as our other individual businesses (Simply Peachy and Pictures and Hearts Photography) so we’re always there for one another if one of us gets a bit overwhelmed by work or life in general. Oh and we love attending fun events like the Mother’s Den Brunch for the inspiring and informative speakers as well as meeting other likeminded business owners and creatives. It keeps things interesting and it’s always such a pick-me-up when you know you’re not the only one who’s feeling a little overwhelmed!

The Mothers Den: Do you have a favourite tool for systemising your work and helping you create more time?

Sandra and Amelia: We are huge fans of anything that helps you schedule social media - so programs like Latergramme have been really useful in allowing us to plan our posts as well as any marketing strategies or campaigns. Google Apps for Business has also been great for us to consolidate all our materials and calendars which means we can both be working on things without it all getting lost in our own individual systems. Makes looking for that email template much easier!

The Mothers Den: What do you like to do when you are not working?

Sandra and Amelia: It might seem a little cliche but we both love spending time with Annabelle and Liam when we’re not busy working. They just grow so quickly, we don’t want to miss a thing so when the kids aren’t at daycare and on weekends, you’ll find us looking for something fun to do with the kids and the hubbies. That said, we do love the occasional bludgy brunch dates during the week and wine o’clock when the kids are in bed!
