I Am Mother, Hear Me Roar

This morning, during a rare moment of calm, I received a phone call from a friend whose world had aligned with mine and also found herself in an extraordinary moment of peace.

With no little cubs to interrupt us, we were free to talk about all things life, newborn and family. Eventually, the conversation started to turn to business. With her youngest due to start school next year, she is starting to think about going back to work.

However, she has a problem.

dont believe everything you think

With 6 years out of the workforce, she is feeling out of touch and left behind. She has completely lost confidence in her skills and is considering positions which undervalue her knowledge and worth. She feels like she doesn’t deserve the type of job that she is interested in. Most importantly, she is too afraid to go out and claim the life that she wants.

True story and all too common.

Spend five minutes talking to any woman and you will find that more often than not, she’s suffering from “imposter syndrome”. You know what I’m talking about – when that itty bitty crappy committee pipes up and tells you that you are not worthy of that job. Not worthy of that win. Not worthy of anything good that comes out of your hard work . Despite the fact that there is so much evidence pointing in the other direction.

Compare this to the “God complex” that plagues many men and you will see that as women, sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Sometimes I think it’s a conspiracy and if we were really given the space to embrace our awesomeness as women, the world wouldn’t be able to handle us. We need to stop selling ourselves short. Stop being blind to our brilliance and stop being afraid to be proud of ourselves. Because that way of thinking does us no justice and stops us from making the most of this precious life.

So it’s time to stand up, Mumma, and let your inner lioness roar. The doubt and insecurities have no place here. As the late, great, Roy Orbison said, “Anything you want, you got it.” All you need is to give yourself permission to stand up and get it.

What do you think? Are you a renegade leader or do you still struggle to back yourself?
